This is a track about a person ‘dating church culture’ and the spiritual dangers of such behaviour. The lyrics intentionally have a double meaning. The Bible speaks about the corporate Church as the “bride of Christ”, assigning her with feminine pronouns, images and qualities (cf. Eph. 5:25-27, Rev. 19:7-9, 21:2, 2 Cor. 11:2, John 3:29, Isa. 54:5, 62:5, Matt. 25:1-13). When I say “She” in the lyrics I mean, shallow or low church culture, with little to no connection or understanding to the universal-catholic, apostolic church, the faithful traditional liturgy of the Divine Service, the rich historical pastoral use and spiritual nourishment of Holy Word and Sacraments (Baptism and Holy Communion). On feedback I have received, contrary to what it sounds like—I’m not in anyway talking about women’s ordination.
When I say “I” in the lyrics, I don’t mean me, Peter Noble, I mean Christ (first person singular), and/or to mean the True “One, Holy, catholic, apostolic church”. Pastorally, the traditional church (“I” Christ) is waiting. His church, is patient and kind and waiting for you. But not only singular waiting. Christ as the body of believers in the corporate church sense is waiting too.
